Born again mountain man training blog

So, I've renamed this blog to be a bit more generic and am going to start using it as a general training blog.  I found that logging what I am doing helped me to keep track and focus on goals.  That and a few people asked me if I was going to start blogging again for the next endeavor.

That brings up a good point, what is the next endeavor?  Well...  I've been focusing on my knee getting better that I haven't planned much so stay tuned.  There will be mountains I promise...

Back

So, I'm back...

This trip kicked my ass.  Was hard as hell, but fantastic.  I learned a ton and definitely got what I went out there for.  Of course I sprained my knee on the third day as well...

If you want to see any of the pictures from the trip check them out here.

These are from the second 2/3 of the trip, I'm still uploading the first portion.  I've reached my Flickr upload limit...

The adventure begins

So folks, I write this from Seattle airport waiting for my connecting flight up to Bellingham, WA.  Did my last full pack workout one week ago today, been resting the past week.  Have to be honest, I feel worse resting than being active, well, that won't be an issue for the next few weeks...

The group I am going with will pick me up at some un-Godly hour tomorrow, I think 6:30 a.m. from the classy Best Western hotel so the instructor/guide can vet if we have the correct gear with us.  We'll re-pack and then make the very long hike up to base camp and my new home for the next 5 days on Mount Baker.  This is going to be the longest time I've ever spent in a tent, let alone spent in a tent on snow...

I'll make another post and hopefully post some pictures in 6 days when I get back from the first section.

Wish me luck folks.

T-minus 10 days and counting...

Apologies for dropping off the face of the training blog earth.  To be honest, I decided to stop because the number of injuries I had was going to turn this blog into a whine blog instead of a mountain man blog.

Well, that's more or less behind me.  Yvonne the physical therapist is almost literally a miracle worker and through the wonder of hard work, I seem to be in good shape for this trip.  A few highlights of the last month.

Hiking has reached a whole new level as I have started hiking and training with a full pack...  That's 50 lb on the back for 8 miles or so.  Plus one workout during the week in-town.  Quite an image, me trecking around Brooklyn with a huge backpack on.  I couldn't get it to be heavy enough so I have to add a dumbbell.

10 days until I start the first program.

6 days on the mountain

1 day of rest

12 days out for the second program.

Will update again before I leave.

Day 8 - April 3, 2011 - New Hike in Harriman san Sister

A moment of tranquility brought to you by me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdIINeuNhcA&feature=youtube_gdata_player

So, I skipped days 6 and 7, climbing indoors, not much to tell.

The title of this hike comes from my flaky sister bailing on me at the last second.  Slacker.  Personally I think she feared the distance increase.

For day 8, it was an 8 mile hike, I think it was more like 9, in Harriman starting from a new spot.  It's amazing what happens when you go just a bit further into the park than the first parking lot.  I saw 1 hiker the entire hike.  Beautiful area, the blight that seems to have affected all of the pine trees in the earlier hiking area wasn't affecting them today, much nicer and alot less bleak looking.

A few stats from today.

# of chipmunks I mistook for a bear: 0 (who mistakes a chipmunk for a bear?  sheesh)
# of chipmunks that scared the bejeezuses out of me... : 1

Just about the same pack weight as last time, I think it's time to increase.  And I think I am going to add an in-city session of heavy pack walking, maybe I'll just carry all of my books with me to work and then get off of the subway a few stops early.  Seems odd but it's on the list of training regimen they sent me.

Day 5 - Climbing Poorly - March 27, 2011

Climbing for endurance...  Doing everything for endurance...  I'm starting to run out of endurance...

No, seriously, it's interesting.  This is the first time I have really trained this hard since my mid-20s probably.  Endurance in your late 30s is different...  Seems that training in one area drains me in another, very interesting watching the onslaught of aging...  Oh, and the arm is hurting again...

OK, enough of that.

Climbing indoors.  Tried to work endurance bouldering which is always a challenge.  Traversing and laps basically.

Day 4 - Hiking with little sis. - March 26, 2011

Hiking up in Harriman again.  Beautiful day, somewhere in the high 20s when we started hiking.  Hit AWFUL traffic trying to take the deegan out of the city.  It was closed, why the hell does the city actually close entire roads?  unbelievable...  We did the same hike as I did last week.  It was a good training hike and i'm curious if all of this training is doing anything.

Distance: ~ 6 miles
# of times we got lost: 2 (Yes, it's more than last time, hush.)
Additional weight in the pack: added about a gallon of water, I think the pack is around 25 or 30 pounds at this point.  Will be up to 50 within a few weeks in theory.

Layla took a ton of photos on the hike which i'll post as soon as I get them.  The landscape was kind of perfectly barren, the recent snow added to the wasteland'esque aspect.  This time I didn't climb after hiking, learned from my last attempt.  Climbing will be tomorrow.

Overall, this hike was much easier than last time.  I think that a large part of that was having a friend along, but in theory I might actually be getting back in shape.
